Ok, dumb flame arrestor/air filter question

Ok, so as I understand it, we run flame arrestors to prevent a backfire flame from reaching a possible air fuel mixture in the bilge and blowing up the boat. We don't need air filtration because the marine environment is fairly dust free...

Any opinions on whether an air filter assembly would perform the same flame arrestor action? The filtration aspect is an improvement (Though it may cause an extremely minor loss in performance).

Why do I ask right? I changed form a 2 to 4 barrel and I'm having a tough time finding a 4 barrel fa for a resonable price.

Any thoughts welcome,

Chay

Have you looked here? http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac...keywords.flame arrestor--**********.767206418

The bottom line, there is no advantage of restricting air flow in the engine with a filter.

Also, most (or all) States REQUIRE USCG Approved "Backfire Flame Control" (flame arrester)

? 25.35-1 Requirements.

top (a) Every gasoline engine installed in a motorboat or motor vessel after April 25, 1940, except outboard motors, shall be equipped with an acceptable means of backfire flame control.
(b) Installations made before November 19, 1952, need not meet the detailed requirements of this subpart and may be continued in use as long as they are serviceable and in good condition. Replacements shall meet the applicable conditions in this section.
(c) Installations consisting of backfire flame arresters bearing basic Approval Nos. 162.015 or 162.041 or engine air and fuel induction systems bearing basic Approval Nos. 162.015 or 162.042 may be continued in use as long as they are serviceable and in good condition. New installations or replacements must meet applicable requirements of subpart 58.10 of this chapter....................yada yada
I'll bet Canadian law requires the same.......

An air filter is not a replacement for a flame arrester. There is a reason that they mandate flame arresters on a boat.

Thanks for the replies. Like I said, it was a dumb question.

Bubba1235, thanks for the link. That's way better pricing that I was looking at.

It was not a dumb question. Dumb questions are the ones that you already know the answer to, but looking for someone to help you rationalize doing the wrong thing. If all you need is information or clarification, it's smart that you ask.
