Do i need the piston stop tool to install the sensor or can I just put the engine in gear, secure the prop and replace the sensor?

Thanks!

Re: OIS Optical Sensor Replacement

The optical sensor is screwed onto the rotating sensor plate. This can be removed by unscrewing the timing cover bolt on top of the crankshaft and then a few screws. The bolt should be reasonably easy to remove (as you suggest) but remember to use Loctite when you replace it. (Ther service manual specifies that you also should use Locquic primer).

Providing you don't disturb the two timing adjustment levers, the timing shouldn't change. However, I would check the timing just to be sure. To do this, as per the manual, you need to use the piston stop tool to set up the TDC pointer and then use an electronic analyzer. I've just been through this with my Johnson 150. I made my own piston stop tool out of an old sparkplug & threaded rod and I also made up an electronic analyzer (see my recent post "Low cost analyzer for setting OIS2000 timing"). Works a treat and a lot easier than setting the timing at WOT in the water. I've got a few people interested in this analyzer at the moment.

You don't mention what motor you have. What was your fault in the first place?

Seasport

Re: OIS Optical Sensor Replacement

It appears to be fixed, I replaced the powerpack, coils and optical sensor as well as the wires.

The engine would run for about a half hour then just shut off, wouldn't start for another 15 or 20 mins.

Now to figure out this cooling issue.
