Hello all,how are you doing? Thanks for reading this post and for any input.I just received my 25 HP Mercury 2 stroke that I bought through the i-boats special program / lease return. After looking her over I slapped the ears on her and fired her up.She started right away and purred like a kitten.I let it idle for a few minutes and then shut it down. A few minutes after that I noticed an oily/watery, black/dark brown liquid draining from the junction of the leading edge of the prop hub and the lower unit housing. Is this just normal drainage of exhaust and cooling water mixture or could there be a problem. I checked the lower unit lube and all is well with it,which in my mind rules out a leaking prop shaft seal. Thanks for your reply. :

When you lay an outboard motor down on its side you will usually have fluids come out of it like this. Since this motor was just shipped to you I'll bet that's what is was.

Sounds like a normal combination of unburned fuel/oil and water. Something those old filthy 2-strokes just tend to do! :D

I would agree with everybody on this but
change to TCW oil and start at 35 to 1
run about two tanks in it then go to
50.to 1.
GOOD LUCK
REX A. HUBBLE

Re: Oily spooge leaking from new merc 25 HP

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post.I called the tech department at Mercury today to see what they said about this. They told me this was normal and said that the colder the water temperature the more it will do this. They also said that the 25 HP model was especially prone to this. What is strange to me is that I have a 1958 Johnson 10 HP that has never done this.I would think that the older motor would be much more likely to do this.I don't get it. I wonder if some 2 stroke oils will cause this more than others?Who knows.I do know that I can't wait for the weekend to try out my new motor!!!!

The older engine does not have thru hub exhaust-that' why you did not see it before.
Enjoy your new engine!
