Need help. Have a 98 mastercraft w/vortec engine, bought used this summer. Went to winterize for first time and the block drain plug hole on drivers side seemed slow to drain. tried to clean hole and oily goo inside block came out on screw driver. Is this the signs of cracked block or what would cause this? Engine Oil doesn't appear to have water in it.. engine ran great this summer. Just looking for ideas here.. not a hard core mechanic and wanted thoughts before I take it it to service dept.

where was the boat used at? Lake, ocean, brackish, if the oil seems ok, then you probably don't have any cracks.. but you may have some kind of sludge in the cooling sys..........need more info....

Re: oily goo when draining block water

sorry, it was fresh water usage, mainly large freshwater lakes. THis goo is really oily.. looks like dirty engine oil.. it even smelled like gas fumes. The oil level may be like a quart low after about 20 hours use.. that I put on it after buying it. I'm not an internal engine guy by any means.. I just can't figure out how oil would get into that area unless something was cracked or leaking. Any ideas appreciated!

On Some sbc blocks there are oil ports that may have similar plugs, did you possibly remove a wrong plug ?? i can't think of anywhere in a sbc that has pressurized oil near the water jacket... was there water behind the oil,? or just oil behind that plug ???? i not familiar with your boat.. which side is the "drivers side" ??? port?, or starboard ??
