I don't have much high-tech/high priced fishing gear, so usually spray my reels with WD-40, dabs of waterproof grease on the inside gears, etc. Only one bass!....bad day fishing!;)

Yea lol my soul hurt after that trip. None of my reels were over $100. I just didn't know how far I should take them apart

I grease my reels about every two years. Tear down clean all old out then apply new. Normally in fall so ready in spring.

Why are you removing the cover? There is nothing "inside" a reel that requires oil.

Reel lubrication is one of my pet peeves. 99.9% of all the reels come in to my shop for repair are over oiled to the point that it's infiltrated the drag stack and the drag needs replaced. If oil is not seeping out of every crack, the reel is so caked with grease you can hardly turn the handle.

Gears get grease and most, not all, bearings get oil. Generally speaking, high-speed bearings get oiled and low speed bearings get greased.( i.e. The spool bearings on a casting reel get oiled. The spool bearings on a trolling reel and the bearings in the drive are greased). On a spinning reel, you need to oil the handle and the bail spring screw from time to time. The drives in the inexpensive spinning reels usually wears out before they require maintenance.

Between boat and surf tackle I service 30 some odd personal reels a winter.

The trolling reels get the drive gears cleaned and greased every two years unless there is an issue. The bearings are greased and drag stacks are disassembled, cleaned and inspected every year.
On my conventional surf reels, the spool bearings are oiled daily when in use. The gear grease is changed every other year.

Some reels are much more complicated than others - Stellas; I would be afraid to take one apart. A guy in my brothers fishing club does a great job, every couple of years I pay him to do all my reels.

Good Advice, All this rain we've been having lately gave me enough spare time to do my own this year but I usually do send them in bi-annually for a cleaning and tune up. I send them back to the Diawa and Shimano for overhaul and get any upgrades done at the same time. Last time they changed out the drag system on my Team Diawa Luna with the upgraded one that lets you go all the way out to zero without needing to remove the primary clutch (washer).

If you just want to oil them up, don't use WD-40. WD-40 is a water dispersant and not a permanent type lubricant. Once it dries out it leaves behind a residue that will attract dirt much faster than a clean surface. Beleive it or not I learned that lesson from using it on my Framing Nailer. The oils that the manufacturer provides are the best and that tiny bottle should last several years. I clean to outside of my reals with Windex sprayed on a terry cloth towel. I don't spray it on the reel itself for fear of the fine mist getting inside the reel. I'm not sure what it would do if it did but why risk it.

I wouldn' worry about it. All my reels get hosed off and wiped down with WD at the end of the day. 10-15 years of salt and sand and they still look like new.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't. I guess I'm just paranoid. They get all sorts of mist on them from just using them.
