I just bought a 1993 evinrude 150 intruder and the low oil horn goes off every now and then .My question is does this horn mean the oil reservoir is low or the oil to the motor is low? I have filled the reservoir so I'm not sure why this horn sounds . thanks for the help.Bill

Re: oil warning horn

Hey BC....

Depends on the horn warning.

If the tone is an urgent 1/2sec tone every 1/2sec. then there a problem with the oil delevery.

If the tone is a 1/2sec tone every 20sec. or so, then that means the reservoir is low.

If the tone is the second tone, from above, the sending unit in the reservoir may be faulty.

If the tone is the first tone mentioned above, I would be looking for lose oil line connections or possibly a bad primer bulb.

Now on the other hand....if the tone is a steady tone, one of two things.

One....the engine is over heating in which case the water pump impeller needs a change out or one of the two tstats need replaced.

Two....the steady tone also could mean that the fuel flow to the pump is being restricted. Look for kinked hoses or restrictions to the flow.

Re: oil warning horn

Is there a way to test a warning horn? I have a 2000 merc 200hp, and i think under the dash, with all the other wires, is a small round black horn??? It is connected with a few wires, and looks like it could be a horn....how can i find out? As you probably know from my other posts, i went through 2 powerhead failures and NEVER heard a horn, a sound, a beep, nothing!! She just came off plane, shut down, and it was over.

Re: oil warning horn

thanks for the quick response,Wow! I filled the reservoir all the way but get this horn about once ever minute to twenty minutes. I'm not sure what that means but I think I'll bring it in for a look over just to be on the safe side. Also I have a low end stutter and some times it even dies . I think it could be the fuel pump . Get it to 2500 rpm's and holy cow does this thing run.Again thanks .Bill

BC...just to throw a wrench into it, it could also be the horn module going bad. Is the alarm regular of just does it happen whenever?

HI BC, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR SUCKING AIR IN FROM SOMEWHERE. THATS WHY AT OVER 2500 RPMS ITS SEEMS TO BE RUNNING FASTER. YOUR LEANING OUT THE FUEL MIXTURE & SUCKING MORE AIR IN. CHECK YOU GAS LINE HOSE & HOSE CLAMPS. ALSO CHECK THE FUEL FITER ON THE MOTOR, THE O-RING & RUBBER GASKET LEAK AIR SOMETIMES & CAUSE THESE PROBLEMS. I WOULD BE VERY CAREFUL RUNNING YOUR MOTOR IN THIS CONDITION. RUNNING LEAN WILL MAKE THE MOTOR RUN VERY HOT & PISTONS DON'T LIKE IT VERY MUCH.
