Oil Warning Alarm

I have a 93 200 Mariner EFI. While out of town for a 2 day tournament, I noticed oil under the cowl after fishing on Saturday. I found the clear hose that connects the oil reservoir to the oil injection pump was cut. I replaced the hose and filled the reservoir. Sunday while on the lake, the oil alarm came on. I noticed that the reservoir was low, so I added oil as needed, but the alarm kept sounding. I did confirm that the alarm was being triggered by the float in the reservoir cap by unscrewing the cap, starting the engine and moving the float up and down. Now that I'm back at home, I read my manual and noticed that I needed to bleed the air by running the engine with the reservoir cap unscrewed 1/2 turn. So I connected the fake-a-lake, filled the remote oil tank and the reservoir, cranked up the engine, and bled the air. No alarm. I let the engine run for 30 minutes and never received the alarm. I decided that I should put the boat on the water to see what would happen, so I headed to the lake, backed down the ramp, started the engine, and the alarm came on again. I bled the air again by unscrewing the reservoir cap. Still getting alarm. I bled the line to the oil injection pump via the bleed screw on the pump. Still getting the alarm. I looked a little closer and found that the hose going from the injection pump to the vapor separator had air in it. Being cautious, I disconnected the line from the separator and ran the engine for 10 seconds. No oil came out of the line. What does all this mean? Is the injection pump shot? If so, why did I not receive the alarm while the boat was in the driveway running with the earmuffs? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Oil Warning Alarm

You answered your own question! The float in the tank triggers the alarm.Thats it.All it tells you is if the tank is full or empty, not weather the pump or engine gets oil.Maybe its sticking. Its a coincidence when you put it in the water, was the boat on an angle, sitting on the boat ramp? etc etc Is the float leaking and filling with oil?

Re: Oil Warning Alarm

Figured it out! I had two issues going at the same time. It was not the reservoir cap. I replaced the cap with a new one and still got the alarm. I then noticed the red LED on the water sensing module was illuminated. I dumped the water separating filter and alarm went away. Don't know why they use the same alarm for the water sensing module as they do for the oil system.

Re: Oil Warning Alarm

Bass, be sure to catch what Russ said. The oil alarm only indicates oil in the resevoir, not if your oil pump is working. Sounds like you solved your problrm with the sender, but many folks assume the oil warning is monitoring the oil pump. Glad you got you problem fixed.
