I've got a 1989 Mercruiser 4.3L V6 Alpha One. It's new to me, so I'm still seeing how it runs, but I noticed the oil temp. gauge showed about 160 or so when I put the boat in and then after about an hour when I stopped the temp had risen to over 200 degrees. I really don't know much about engines, but according to the manual the temp should be much lower. Any suggestions?

Re: Oil temperature

I don't know of too many boats that have oil temp gauges... Mostly high performance full race boats would run one...I'm guessing you mean Water temp.... Yes 200 degrees is about 20-30 degrees too high for water temp.... Oil temp on the other hand will most certainly exceed the 200 degree point if run for a fair amount of time at crusing speed... I run an oil temp gauge on my truck and have a very large oil cooler and regularly see 220 degrees and higher at interstate speed....That being said It's probably time for a new impeller in the water pump and a new thermostat...
