Oil slick from F250 - HELP!!!!!!

Hello everyone,

I have a boat with twin F250's. I run the boat a lot, and did fish the last few days in a row. I just had the VST tanks serviced, along with all the engine fuel filters. While the boat was out, I changed the gear oil and it looked great. Engine oil was changed 100 hours ago, and plan on doing it next time down to the marina.

The other day after fishing, I noticed a slight oil slick around the back of the boat. I fished again the next day, and after cleaning fish, noticed it again. So, I went and popped the upper cowl, looked and sniffed around, and couldn't find any evidence of leaking fuel or oil. I looked underneath the lower cowl at the driveshaft and no sign of oil. The gear case plugs look fine. I noticed "fresh" oil slick radiate out from the transom when I tilted the starboard engine up and down. I looked at the trim/tilt rods, and didn't see any indication that they were leaking. Frustrated, I left the boat overnight. This morning, I went back down. WITHOUT starting the motor, I checked everything over again under the cowl...no sign of fuel or oil leaks...nothing collected in the front of the lower cowl while trimmed up. I tilted the engine up and down a number of times with no oil slick. I then took my dock hose and sprayed freshwater in the lower cowl, and tilted the engine up and down. There it was...the oil slick appeared! What could be causing this? Could it be spilled fuel or maybe the CRC mixture they sprayed the block with that is stuck between the midsection and its shroud?

Any thoughts?

THANKS!

when you change oil on them it is usual to have oil that runs into the bottom of the engine shroud. also i personally spray crc engine stor and corrosion inhibitor all over the engine could possibly be that... if you are really worried check your oil. and how tight the oil/fuel filter and vst pump drain screw. it's usual to have some oil slicks after it's been serviced

Re: Oil slick from F250 - HELP!!!!!!

It only takes a few drops of oil on the surface of the water to create a pretty big "rainbow-type" oil slick, with all the oils, greases, lubricants like WD-40 I use in and around my motor, seems to always be at least a small slick, nothing like the BP Spill or Exxon-Valdez, but it's usually there. Maybe when they last changed your oil they spilled some down in that lower cowl. Good Luck!
