I have a 1984 Model I outdrive. There is a slow oil leak from a hole on the starboard side of the lower unit. The hole is open, and is locted on the bottom of the rounded cylindrical part of the gear housing on the forward end.

Any ideas as to what this hole is for and what has allowed a leak?

Sounds like the lower drain hole, there should be a plug in it.........

Sounds to me like the "weep" hole. The lower unit needs to be resealed, probably the lower base of the water pump or the shift arm seal.
Check out this web site..... web page

I goofed on the location. It is just above the rounded cylindrical part, not on the bottom of it. Is there supposed to be a weep hole on this unit? This is way below water line. Could this be a hole knocked into the housing? It is about 3/16" diamenter. It is definitely not the drain hole.

Shift shaft seal is leaking. The hole is a drain for the front cavity to drain so it will not crack if boat is used where it freezes.

yep
either shift shaft or drive shaft, the weep hole drains the pump and pump cavity when the unit is removed from the weater.
time to reseal.
good luck and keep posting

When they leak at the hole.. I reseal everything. Upper and lower. Dont have time for call backs and I like to keep the customer comming back.

Thanks for the inputs. Sounds like a big job; or should I say, another job! This boat has been a string of fixups ever since I bought it. Rotten wood, no spark, carb, U-joint, and now seals, not to mention the regular maintenance.

Score so far: Fixing: 300 hours. Using: 10.

Do you guys think there would be a problem running the boat with the slow outdrive fluid leak? I'd like to go out this weekend.
