oil seal replacement

I have a 25 HP '92 Mercury. Just pulled out the bearing carrier assembly to replace the 2 oil seals. I removed the old seals by tapping them out with a hammer and nail driver as the manual suggested. This took a little time as they did not come out easy. My question is how do I get the new seals in without damaging them?

Re: oil seal replacement

hello
mmmm its tempting to say" using a suitible tool" :) :) lots of japenese manuals do that. it will refernce you to a speacial tool part number.
now comes the bad news. did you measure how deep the seals were seated in the bore? some go flush and some recess. some installation tools have a stop to position the seal and some you have to measure. I usually can find a socket that will fit just try to use a press and not a hammer( also known as a swing press.)
good luck and keep posting
PS that is why I have so much tied up in special tooling :(

I agree with Rodbolt. Seals can be a pain. I allways enjoy it when the manual says to use special tool# so and so. I do the same thing, I will carefully choose a socket that closly fits. Even if you have the correct tool you can screw it up if your not careful.

Re: oil seal replacement

I did not measure although i did notice that there is a circular line on the inside of the carrier, towards the exterior. The outer seal sat flush to this line so I think that I am good there. I guess it'll just be a matter of not pushing it in too far. I'll see what I can do with the socket. I don't have or know what a press is so I'll have to do a litte research. I appreciate the help guys.

Re: oil seal replacement

I have read this as well as just about every oil seal post on these forums. I replaced my oil seals and lower unit is still taking on water. I know for a fact that I did not seat the shift shaft seal all the way down nor the water pump or prop shaft. I know the shift shaft seal seated flush but not sure about water pump and prop shaft. I was scared to put back like it was because I didn't want to damage seal. When they say use a socket where do you want the socket to sit on the seal? On the metal outer ring? These seals have a metal outer shell with rubber middle with a spring around it. 63 merc 650
I have not done a pressure test as of yet.
