The owners manual for my '82 Mariner 90 HP inline 6 states to mix the oil at 50:1, but on several other boards, people have been saying that 50:1 is inadequate and I really should be mixing at 40:1, regardless of using dino or synthetic....what do you guys mix at?

Thanks

James

Follow your owners manual instructions for mix.

Re: Oil Ratio

If the manual states 50/1,why would you want to mix at 40/1? It will foul the plugs, stink and smoke, and build up carbon.
With an oil injection engine (as an example) although the ratio states 50/1, that would be at high speed at slow speed it might only use 100/1. That is why it is called a VRO "Variable Ratio Oil"
That's my $.02.

Re: Oil Ratio

well the boys down at Scream and Fly have said time and time again that mixing it 40:1 will increase the longevity of a motor tremendously. I was just curious if any engine builders or dealers here would back that up.....I personally mix at 50:1, but if it would help.........

Thanks

James

Re: Oil Ratio

Excessive rich oil ratio as pursuit mentioned will create excessive carbon build-up and shorten the life of your motor , unless perhaps you scream and fly everywhere you motor.

Re: Oil Ratio

I don't go as fast as the S&F guys, but I run my L6 Merc as hard. I do run syn oil at 40-1 in it.
In my 80HP pontoon I run Merc Premium blend at 75-1, I idle around alot. I also use electrode gap
sparkplugs in it,not surface gap. The trolling motor on my fishing boat I mix at 90-1. Most motors at WOT need 16-1 and at idle 120-1, 50-1 was a safe all around mix for most all motors and
it became the std mix until VOI came along. I ALL
WAYS RECOMEND MIXING YOUR OIL AS IT STATES IN YOUR OWNERS MANUAL. My labor is free and parts are at cost so don't do as I do.
