Like everyone else I enjoy reading your answers but I now have a question. I have a very old 85 F250 with a 6.9 diesel. It is all stock except that I did convert it over to a 7.3 glow plug system at about 300,000 miles. As recommended I've always used 15W40 oil in it. I do a lube and oil change every 3-5K or six months whichever comes first. It is only used for work these days when I need to haul some thing. Is there a difference between the oil I buy at the auto store 15W40 and the oil you guys recommend all the time 15W40 Diesel Marine Amsoil. I'm assuming there is.
Thanks Link

Yes, there is a diference, The diesel marine is a full synthetic diesel or gas Truck or Marine!

Probably not neccesary in your aplication, Delo 400 15W-40 would be my choice for your aplication. Unless you are a freak about oil then you would notice some improvement with the synthetic, and could go all year long on one change!

Oh, and if you had been using synthetics all those miles your engine would have lasted much longer! Hee, Hee, Hee,! :D

Yep Link, ditto for LD's advice. When you get that new one, start with syn's after the break-in. I'd just keep keepin the dino oil clean for your old timer.

Its a nick name people have put on conventional oil because it came from the ground, suposidly from rotten Dinasaurs and such, Hummm. Compaired to synthetics which are man made mostly, although some pao base stocks can come from highly refined petro oils!
