MY ENGINE OIL TANK WILL NOT REFILL AUTOMATICALLY. I HAVE NEW FLOAT SWITCH AND NEW WIRING HARNESS ON ENGINE. MY ALARM DOES GO OFF WHEN IT REACHES ABOUT A THIRD FULL. I CAN REFILL THE TANK WITH THE MANUAL SWITCH, SO THE PUMP ON THE REMOTE TANK WORKS FINE. I AM AFRAID I HAVE A BAD RELAY IN THE CDI UNIT. A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX. ANY IDEAS ON WHAT OTHER FIXES? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

time to buy a new oil control unit... If the emergency switch is working and you have a new float switch..... nothing else in the system!

I WAS AFRAID OF THAT, BUT STARTING WITH THE 90 MODEL, THE OIL CONTROL SENDING UNIT IS PART OF THE WHOLE SOLID STATE SWITCH BOX. PART COST ONLY ABOUT $550. I THINK THE 89 AND PREVIOUS HAD A SEPARATE SENDING UNIT. I WAS HOPING FOR A CHEAPER FIX SINCE EVERYTHING ELSE SEEMS TO WORK FINE. IT SEEMS A SHAME TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SWITCH FOR THE ONE PROBLEM.

I know you said that you have a new float, but it you haven't done so, I would still get a meter and check the readings to be sure it is working properly. A Yamaha repair manual will tell you how to do this. I would also make sure that the rubber washer in the bottom is seated correctly. If that turns up nothing, then I would start looking on ebay for the parts you need.

I tried that last night, but the manual says you need a special Yamaha tester so I can't tell much from my meter. I will try the washer seating thing tonight. Are you saying the the float may be stuck and not activating, or that a poorly seated washer my block the flow into the tank? Also, the manual says that the system must be bleed if the emergency switch is used, but this doesn't make sense to be if the remote tank is full of oil. Any ideas on the bleeding issue?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. I just posted a similar response on another thread. I had this washer get out of place and it caused the slide to stick in a position that indicated low oil, this caused my oil pump to keep running and it would overfill the tank. I am guessing that the opposite could happen where it could keep the slide in the opposite position. I'm not guaranteeing this is your problem, but what the heck, its worth a look. The washer wouldn't be blocking the flow since you said that the manual fill switch works.

I didn't think you needed a special tester, I though that you were just measuring resistance so an ohm meter would work. I'll have to look at my manual again.

Bleeding the pump is easy, although I think you might be confusing which pump is to be bleed. They are referring to the pump on the engine that sends oil to the intakes. What they are saying is that if you had to use the manual switch, you might have ran your engine oil tank low and pulled air into the system. There is a bleed screw on that pump, just be sure to get a rag under it.

Not sure if it's the same on a Yamaha, but on my Merc, in addition to bleeding the pump, you have to bleed the air out of the engine reservoir. To do this, tighten the caps on the engine reservoir and the remote tank. Unscrew the cap on the engine reservoir half a turn. Run the engine until oil starts to come out around the cap and then tighten the cap.

<*}}}><
