1992 75horse mercury o/b serial # od165408.
The oil pump quit working and the alarm went off and the boat was brought home just over idle.
mixed the oil with the gas and now the motor runs great but won't throttle up when in gear, rpm's go up but no increase in speed, heres my question?
Is there some kind of a cut off device on this motor when the pump goes out to keep me from throttling up? is a new oil pump going to fix this or is the motor toast?
It idles great and smooth, even sounds good when you give it some throttle, just won't gain speed and alarm won't shut off,
Thanks guys, Razzor

Re: oil pump and throttle problem

The system did just as it is suppose to. It warned you of a no oil condition and that's all it will do. It's up to you to run it or not when the alarm sounds. I don't know of anything that will shut the motor down to low RPM's when it senses no oil. It may if it's overheating. I would replace the pump or whatever part of the pump failed. I would only do this after taking a compression test to see if any harm was done. Once the alarm went off, it should have been shut down until the cause was found or oil mixed with the fuel immediately to prevent further damage. Also, if in gear the RPM's go up but you don't move, look for the prop hub to be spun. Unless you mean it revs up in neutral, but won't go on the water...Then that's a whole different story...

Thanks Rick, I will do the compression check in the morning, What kind of #s should I be looking for on this motor, 1992 mercury, 75 horse, serial # od165408
Thanks, Razzor
