I have a 1987 Yamaha 150 Outboard and the oil is being continuously pumped from the main tank causing the reserve to overflow. This will happen as soon as the power is turned on, even if the motor is not running. What is the fix to this problem and where do you suggest getting parts???

Re: Oil Problems

I have seen the oil level sensor on the motor tank go bad or the little black box with the switch, on the side of the motor, go bad causing this problem. ;)

Re: Oil Problems

Yamaha put out a bulletin on this. It has been several years since I read it but the problem was low voltage. It could be a flunky float for the transfer pump but if the boat has sat several weeks or if you noticed the battery was low? Check the simple stuff first. If you need it I can track that bulletin down on Monday.

Re: Oil Problems

Just wondering if you have found out what the cause of your oil being continuously pumped from the main tank causing the reserve to overflow?

Iceman, I have heard the same from another person. Is there a way to test the sensor or the black box to eliminate one or the other?

The black box costs $177.15 to replace.
The sensor is $102.95 to replace.

Thanks,
Tim :)
