Ok, I have a remanufactured engine in my boat.
its a 5.7 350. 10 hours on it. The oil press is running near 3/4 gauge max to almost the max pressure when WOT. Is this ok for a reman engine?
The oil pump is brand new and I am running 30 weight oil. All advice is welcome.

Thanks

Wildman

Re: Oil Pressure

What is the max pressure on the gauge?

Basicly a 350/5.7 engine absolutely needs 10psi of oil pressure for every 1000rpms...

Example: 20-25psi on a engine at operating temperature at idle would be very good.. At WOT, say 4800rpm, 60 psi would be plenty comfortable.. ;)

Re: Oil Pressure

That's the rule of thumb we use for all the race-car engines too (which work almost as hard as a boat engine). Any more than that is a waste.

Re: Oil Pressure

Unfortunately the gauge is one of those with the super precise Low to High.... No PSI listed on it just an L and H... Any other thoughts..
I am just concerned that there may be too much if thats possible....

Wildman

Re: Oil Pressure

The best way would be to hook up a real oil pressure gauge directly to the engine. This would eliminate any guesswork as to what the real pressures are.

Chances are that with the new engine you may have gotten a new sending unit that is reading higher than the old one.

Or the pump relief valve is set higher.

Or the old engine had lower oil pressure and the current gauge did't read that high.

Or any combination of the above. But the only way to know for sure is to connect a pressure gauge directly.

I wouldn't trust anything that didn't have psi or kpa on it.

ok then where is the sending unit on the motor so I can attach a gauge directly to it??

THanks

Tallman

Re: Oil Pressure

I've got just over 100 hours on my 350 and it is running just a bit over what Snapperbait recommends.

Just me, but I would rather be just a bit high on pressure as opposed to a bit low.

WIldMan....should be on top of the block in the middle at the back, should look like a small tin can with a single wire. If you follow this link look at the picture and see # 66, thats the oil pressure sending unit. Blo wup of a 350 Crankcase

Re: Oil Pressure

Ok thanks for the info...
I just want to make sure I dont void my warranty or anything like that, I figured it would be high since its a new reman engine, but was not sure if that is good. Like I said on the average it runs about 3/4 gauge max to almost the "H" on the gauge when wide open.... I will see if I can get a manual gauge or something like that to test it out.

Wildman

Re: Oil Pressure

ok so I hooked a mechanical gauge up to it..
I am running about 50-60 PSI at idle.....

What are thoughts on this???

Wildman

Re: Oil Pressure

Sounds high for idle, not that it's a problem. What is the pressure off idle, say at 2000 rpm?

Is this 50-60 psi when cold?
