Hello All:

Well I asked this same qustion and posted it a couple days ago, then the sight went down, and with it, my username and password with the opriginal post. Let's try it again!!

I have a '91 Force 50 engine. I had taken off the lowest trunk unit to inspect some of the inside components. I set the lower gearcase with the prop still on in a bucket. I knocked over the bucket by accident, and then ALL the gear fluid I just put in there for winterization came pouring out of the exhaust screen on the side of the gearcase! WHAT??? This isn't right is it?? I pur the oil in the drain/fill hole and did all that right. It was weird. Any ideas????

Zoltar

zoltar, I will assume from reading your post that you are refering to the intake screens for waterpump.Don't know what you did servicing lower unit as your post is unclear. However, if assembled properly and unit was tipped on side losing lower unit oil out the water intake ,is only possible if there was fracture in intake jacket on lower unit or driveshaft seal is leaking.

Re: Oil pouring out of exhaust ports....

Someone theorized before this thread disappeared that there may be a boot over the driveshaft on that model that is famous for rotting out. Not sure if that is true or not, but in any event, assuming you filled the gearcase properly, this is not normal. If it does indeed "pour" out, then the suspect area should be reasonably apparent.

My suggestion is to get a manual before attempting repair, and if you have to take the gearcase apart, replace all seals.

Ob - Yeah, I'm talking about the intake screens indeed. Great comments Plywoody. I took off the plate that covered the impellar off and inspected the seal on the inside. It didn't seem to look too bad, but then again this is my first outboard motor so it could be a cracked frame or whatever Plywoody called it. Anyway - I have a serial number and Im going to post the info to see if any other Force owners may have a chart to reference it's year and any other specifics to get to a probable cause.

OR

Give up and take it in to have it done by a pro - they could also pressure test the low end which I cannot do.
