Took the boat out of the water after a season at the dock. I started all of the maintenance stuff and pulled the dip stick in the Penta 280 leg. The oil is milky?? It is oviously water in the oil but from were. Can failed bellows cause this??

Thanks

Yes, but the water needs to get passed other seals first before it gets into the gearbox area. You need to perform a vac test AND a pressure test.

Do you have a manual?

Yes a faulty bellows will cause it. The front seal in the drive is not designed to keep water out, only oil in the drive. When you run the drive with water in the bellows, the drive warms up, then when it cools down it sucks water back into the drive. You can usually just remove the bellows from the upper gear box to see if there is water in it or not.

Re: Oil milky in Volvo Penta 280

I am having a similar problem on our boat it to is a 280 volvo and we took it out to do a spring check. We ran it for a day I then changed the oil (it was not milky at that time) then ran it for another day and a half (not very hard mostly trolling) and checked the oil tonight and it was a quart or more high and milky...

there is also an additional problem and the boat seems to be taking on a little more water than usual?? could this be a bellows problem too?

thanks
