After a day out on a freshwater lake about 10 days ago, I noticed some oil leaking from my 1996 (or 95) Mercury 40HP oil injected 2-cycle outboard. The leak seems to be coming from where the propeller is attached to the lower unit from around the outside edge (not the bolts that attach the propeller). It is slowly leaking out at the rate of about 1/2 a teaspoon (or a little more) per day but seems to be slowing down over the days.
Is this probably the 2-cycle oil leaking from the reservoir above or the injection system? Or is there more oil stored within the lower unit itself?
My other question is, does this sound like a serious problem that should be looked at right away, or does it seem ok to leave it until the end of the season and have it looked at when it is winterized?
Thank you for your help
