Here we go I have a 1974 Well Craft with a 1974 Chevy 250 straight six. It has Mercury outdrive. My problem is oil blowing out of PCV I believe. I have that deep down gut feeling I got taken again on a boat. Are there any other causes besides blow by with the rings? Next if it is this I guess I have to do a ring job right? If anyone has done this before do I have to remove engine? Also what else would you do while replacing the rings? Any help would be great. If you need more info let me know.
Thank You Jeff Wolf

Re: Oil Leak

Too much oil, hole in a piston, stuck rings ,slight chance of a head gasket leak into the crankcase,.Removing it would be a lot easier to work on.What else: replace bearings, oil pump&pickup, measure piston to bore clearance, recondition crank and rods, check cam lobes for excessive wear, recondition head.

Re: Oil Leak

get a short block or long block if you can find it. Doing a ring job proper would be best out of the boat to do the machine work on the block. Really depends on how badly worn the block is and the amount of machining (possibly boring) needed to get in shape.

Re: Oil Leak

In boat years, a 1974 is an antique. Along with that goes problems with finding parts. While many of the engine parts are the same as automotive, many of the Mercruiser marinizing parts on the engine, along with the outdrive, transom shild etc. are NLA (No Longer Available) so before you start putting a lot of money into the engine, you better check out everything else before spending your money. And it will take LOTS.

I rebuilt a IL6 a few years ago.....parts were easy to come by. It's an easy engine to work on...

My block was stamped 1967! Bored it out 0.030 and installed new pistons, rings, had the head recond, new oil pump, lifters, etc.....

Ran great!

Now I have a SBC to fool with.......right Don?

Yep, that is exactly what you're doing with it.

Yea Jeff, its gotta come out. How would you get the pan off? Its not that bad though, easier than a car.

Like Don said you got a 30 something year old boat so I wouldn't worry about doing a first class rebuild. Tear it down and see what you got. Maybe you can hone it, throw a set of rings and bearings at it and go a few more years.

Hey FBT, I read a quote somewhere:

"'Believe me, my young friend,' said water rat, 'there is nothing -absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply fooling about in boats.'"

or something like that... ;)
