i just bought a 26ft pacemaker, repowered with a 7.4 ltr mercrusier installed in 1996, oil is pouring out from under the pan, due to the lack of space and with all the stuff i cant see a thing, i can barely get a hand in there , feels like the dip stick tube is going in thru the bottom of the pan, is this possible and what were they thinking, i ck'd out pictures of oil pans on internet for sale and none of them has this.

thanks

Actually they were thinking. If the dip stick tube went into the block, you could not withdraw oil during oil changes. The tube on your boat likely has a threaded fitting at the top to which you attach an oil pump and suck the oil out. That is an alternate method since draining oil into the bilge is sort of a messy way to change oil.

Howdy, And Welcome aboard!

It will be helpful if you post the serial number of the engine. That way we can help you easily identify which pan and other parts are needed.

It's pretty much standard operating procedure (SOP) to have the ability to suck the oil out of the dipstick tube on just about ALL marine inboard engines........ later engines have drain hoses connected that can be pushed out through the rear transom bilge drain so you can gravity-drain the oil, and you can add them to many older engines.

If you have a hole in your pan from corrosion you may have to remove the engine to replace it.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard Stan,....

Like Bubba says, it really don't matter at this point,...
Yank the motor, so ya can Fix it...
Once on the stand, ya oughta be able to see how everything fits together...

At this point, it's hard to say whether yer lookin' at a pan mounted, or block mounted dipstick...
It could be either,... or both...

I once worked on friends boat that the P/O had installed a home made version of the above metioned oil drain hose/tube to change the oil out the bilge hole. The mirror is good advise, i have even seen people stick a small compact digital camara in for a peek. If you for sure feel a dipstick thru the pan, than the others are right its time to pull her.

Re: oil leak

thanks to all who responded, rick it is a marine power 7.4 serial#20903 model s454s sportpak . if the dipstick tube attaches to a fitting that screws into the normal drain plug hole, then i might be able to remove a few things and get a small size friend to come over and remove and replace whatever is underthere, removing the eng is not an option for me right now, i will have to recover from the purchase, i dont even know if i can find anyone around bwk to pay to do it our local boat store only works on outboards. ill have to save as i did to purchase
