I have a 1984 75hp 4cyl and there is what appears to be a small amount of oil leaking from behind the prop. I took the prop off and it is dry at the seal on the outboard end of the prop shaft. Where could the oil be coming from and is it a hard fix? Ser # begins with 655. any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: oil leak

You may just be looking at residual oil in the exaust, check the gear lube and pressure test the lower unit to be sure.

Re: oil leak

If it's dark to black, chances are it's residual exhaust gunk. If it's more or less clear, it could be gear oil.

This forum helped me through a similar scare. I let a dribble of gear oil out to compare to stuff dribbling around the prop and was convince it was exhaust gunk. In any event, I still change the gear oil and feel confident for the next fishing trip.
