Oil leak through Prop

My 1975 Evinrude 75hp leaks oil through the prop when the motor is off in the down position, I have just noticed this and haven't had it in the water yet. I did run it with a flush kit and the leak did not appear to be excessive. What causes this and how do I fix it? Also the prop nut sheared off at the front of the thrust bushing, I drilled out the shaft and tapped a 3/8" x 3/4" bolt and it holds the prop tight against the shaft with a locknut and washer. Has anybody had this experience before, and does this sound like a decent fix?

I justhad the same symptoms in my boat, the seals in the lower unit were shot, not a mechanic, so paid the 300.00 for the re-seal.... I am not sure about your 2nd question....

I'm with Kev...I have never heard of your "fix" for the prop nut...

As far as the seal failing...I've been told that something as simple as getting fishing line caught up in the prop can take out a shaft seal. But I think most would agree it might be most cost effective, not to mention most reliable in the long run, to have both problems cured in the "prop"-er fashion! In other words...fix it right!! Good luck!!

Is it gear oil leaking, or just exhaust/water mix you are seeing? If it's coming from the center of the prop it may just be partially burned 2 stroke oil.

------------------
I'm going to invent a TCW3/citronella oil blend and make a fortune!

Thanks for the replies, motor is running fine, I did find some fishing line around seal right behind prop. No apparent leak now, checked lower unit oil and it was full after running the motor for aboutt 6 hrs
thursday..My fix works also, saved about $400 doing it that way, the bolt should stay as good as the original.
