I have a NS55B (Nissan) outboard and it seems to be leaking oil out of a small hole on the bottom of the lower unit.. This is my first boat and I have only had it three weeks and want to get it on the water.. It has a drink coaster size puttle on the drive way..The oil is clear with a light yellow tent and smells like machine oil. Its coming from a pin hole that is recessed in the bottom left of the bottom unit. The hole belongs there but why is it leaking? How can I find a manual on my outboard? Nissan dosent have my motor listed on their web site...

Thank you for any advice you can give..

Re: oil leak on lower unit

The hole is a drain to let water out of the exhaust leg.some times this will include exhaust residue.
More than likely that is exhaust residue. If the lower unit is leaking it will have water in it.
This will usually turn the gear oil milky.
If you don't know the condition of the gear lube it should be checked before you use it.
Also if you don't know the age of the water pump you should check it.If you are handy with tools these are relatively easy checks. You should get a service manual before starting any repairs.
