Is it 90 weight oil or residue from your engine. You can smell 90 wt vs regular oil. Most of the time the only way out for the drive lube is through the prop shaft seal.If you have some blow by in your engine its coming out your outdrive.

When was it serviced last? The odds of the prop carrier leaking are about 99-1 against. look elseware for the leak if its gear oil.

It definitely gear oil last season on my last trip I damage my prop I think I may of damaged the carrier bearing housing because when I looked inside I could see flakes of it in the puddle of oil I think it's a piece of the carrier
I found a used out drive for $150 dollars so I took the lower unit and put it on the boat so I am going to try to pressure test to confirm that's what it is also I read that it could be the little o ring leaking down but with the oil there and flaky stuff iam not sure but the boat is back up and running 1984 grady white overnighter mercruiser 470 alpha 1 out drive

If the carrier has been in a while you'll have to heat the housing up to get it out. You'll also need a couple of puller legs to apply the load as you heat it. Not an easy job, but do-able.... First you remove the lock nut. I usually find the easiest way it to drill a couple of 1/4" holes in it about 1" apart and then knock that small section out. The lock ring just falls out after that. Then pull the lock tab out, set up the puller legs and start heating where the carrier contacts the sides of the housing.

have you eliminated all the other possabilities?
"looked inside I could see flakes of it in the puddle of oil I think it's a piece of the carrier"
unlikely, seeing silver flakes in the oil may indicate a upper unit seal /wear/damage problem
