Re: oil injection

skiboater,

I'm ready to reengine with a Johnson/Evinrude 90/115 and have the same question. My wrench recommended it on the busted Evinrude 40 - he doesn't have a lot of faith in the VRO. If he reads this, maybe J.B. Cornwell can offer some advice - he seems to be in the know.

cheers, tcube

Re: oil injection

Rigging, scheduled maintenace and inspections. The alarm only tells you if it is pumping oil not the rate. The later model motors have hose from tank to pump that I think is not up to the job. Very easy to mash flat and reduce oil flow. Old style hose was thick wall hose. The only way you can know for sure the pump is pumping(other then locked engine) is mark tank watch oil level go dowm. Should pump app 50/1 all time all RPMS so you use 50 gals fuel should use about 1 gal oil. I would use the VRO and buy OEM manual and learn enough about the system to do a visual inspection and know what maintenance was required. I maintained 3 family bass boats 2 1986 115 still running 1986 GT150 blew piston in 2000, trash in carb. These 3 engines had VRO2 kit installed 1989. The 2 115 still running same pump. The 150 had bad check valve on fuel side (still pumping oil) and was replaced with new pump when rebuildt.

Re: oil injection

I guess I'm just ultra-conservative on this issue. I don't want oil injection on any 2 stroke unless it is computer managed and the computer has a limp-home feature in the firmware to get you home if it fails. Bottom line? 50:1 premix will lube the engine ANYTIME it is running. The legacy of a great idea (VRO) is disconnected and disabled oil injection systems that probably would work just fine. . . until they blow up you engine.

Red sky at night, sailor's delight. . .
JB

J.B.

Thanks - when the new motor is put on, I'll have the injection system disabled and stick to mixing my own.

Semper Gumby
tcube

Re: oil injection

I'm with you guys. But what about the oil sensors on my suzuki 115. How do you disable the sensors so the motor will run properly and sensor buzzers won't be activated?

Hey Suzuki 115, you probably know this by now, but it's 2 leads from your flow sensor/oil filter that you would need to disconnect.
