Is there any easy way to check if the oil injection pump is operational? Can anyone advise on what they think of the oil injection system on Mercury motors? Are they reliable?

In addition to the above, will it hurt if I premix oil in the fuel tank initially just until I am sure the oil injection is working? SO in other words, will a 25:1 mixture cause any harm?

Easiest way to make sure you're pumping oil is to mark the level on the oil tank and run the boat with 50:1 in the fuel tank to be safe. It'll smoke and maybe you'll foul a set of plugs...maybe. After a few hours of running, you should see a drop in the oil tank.

Had mine disconected after burning two pistons. and it is so much easier than worrying about it every time out

What year 90 do you have?

I have an '03 and had similar concerns. When I got last year, ran the 50:1 mix in gas for break in.

Posted same question here in the spring when I launced the boat.

Conclusion was that if it worked last year, should work this year. I plan to have it checked out every couple of seasons when the water pump is changed.

I was still a little concerned this year regarding the oil. I filled it and ran it for decent run. Saw the oil level drop.

IT WORKS!

But I do see your concern. If I was running portable tanks, I probably would run pre mix 'till I was sure.

Related to this. My old 50 ran on pre-mix. It smoked. Less than the 90? Probably but it never really bothered me.

I do understand the convenicence? of premix. Went to town. Forgot to check reservoir. Had to go buy a pint. Probably had enough to get back, but always a little paranoid. Never happen with premix.

My 1954 7.5 evinrude running 24:1 smokes a fair bit but not annoyingly a lot.

I think that eventually pre-mix is the way I'll go.

What is the real advantage of injection?

Joe
