After a complete hose replacement, fuel and oil system clean out, injector calibration/cleaning, etc. I have my fuel system back together and finally fired up my boat for the first time in 8 years.

The good news is that it fired on little more than the touch of the key....the bad news is, my oil injection pump is not passing oil to the VST. My obvious concern is the infamous plastic drive gear failure. I removed the oil pump from the engine but did not remove the shaft and bearing. When I rotate the engine the shaft turns, and when I try to turn the shaft with a screwdriver the shaft will not turn. Therefore, because the drive shaft is not turning freely against the plastic drive gear I'm assuming (and hoping) the plastic gear is not the culprit.

Meanwhile, I disassembled the oil pump and cleaned out any potential blockages and checked for unusual wear. I saw nothing that looked unusual and reassembled, re-installed the pump, bled it again and even left the hose from the oil pump to the VST disconnected. Still nothing. No oil passing through the pump, even when cranking the motor and holding the oil pump lever to full rich.

So, is it possible that the shaft will continue to turn even if the plastic drive gear is broken, but not pump oil? Is it common for an oil pump to fail and if so, how would I test the pump itself? Or, am I just not doing something right to get the oil to flow past the pump initially? For what it's worth, I have bled the line from the tank to the pump and there is no air in that side of the system.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and recommendations.

It is rare to see a oil gear fail on a 3.0 and you wont see anything just cranking the engine, it needs to be running. At idle with oil lever fully open you should get about 26-33 cc of oil in 3 minutes of testing.

Mix up some gas and 2 stroke oil at 50-1 in a 6 gallon tank, then run the engine on that until the oil system bleeds out. Here are the procedures.

Awesome! I really appreciate the replies. When it saw it not pumping I just shut it down.

Now...I have another question I posted previously regarding setting up the linkage. At this time, the linkage does not allow the butterflies to open 100%, nor does the oil pump arm lift to it's peak position. I've read the manual (ser #0G274312) and other threads on setting up the linkage, but I honestly don't understand the exact procedure and steps to properly set up the linkage, TPS, and timing.

I'm probably wrong, but logically, I would think that setting up the linkage to allow WOT in conjunction with full oil mixture would be the first step, then going by the procedures in TSB 96-3 to set-up the TPS, but I don't see where in the procedure of the setting up physical WOT/TPS that the timing should be set.

In other words, do I first set physical WOT and full rich, then adjust WOT to fine tune the TPS, and then set timing?

By the way, the last time the boat was in use it was tuned up at a dealer and I've made no adjustments to the TPS, linkage or timing, and although it's been 8 years, the engine only has about 5 hours on it since being tuned @ dealer and there's no reason for those adjustments to change on their own. However, I do want to double check all of these things before I go run her again and also want to learn the correct procedure.

Thank you again for the info on the oil pump, it is genuinely appreciated.

The timing is preset by the ignition ECM and non adjustable, you want to set your CPS gap 1st,throttle cam 2nd,oil pump 3rd and max throttle last..

Got it. The Service Bulletin says to set max throttle with TPS voltage. Is that more of a "fine" adjustment made after the physical setting of max throttle?
