Oil Injection Problems

My son used my M50DE last weekend and added a quart of very old Stalube 2-cycle oil to quicksilver plus and then the motor began to run very badly. The oil filter seemed gummed up so I cleaned to the oil pump and added fresh oil. We took it out again and it ran well and it ran bad with periods of surging. I suspect I need to clean the entire oil injection pathway. Any ideas?

What, exactly, is a M50DE?

Re: Oil Injection Problems

I don't know exactly how the oil injection system works on that Tohatsu, Velella.

Your description of the symptoms sounds to me like carb troubles. If the oiling system injects the oil into the carbs you may have gum in one or more of them, or the trouble may be unrelated to your oiling system.

I think you need to dismantle and clean the carbs.

Good luck. :)

Re: Oil Injection Problems

If it helps any I have a M40D, which is probably similiar. It injects oil in the manifold behind the carbs.

Looks like there may have been 2 problems, 1 you fixed by cleaning out the injection system/lines to the pump. Now the carbs may need attention.

I'm not sure if you did this or not but it is recommended to run 50-1 oil in the gas after you do any work on the oil injection system. Just to make sure all is well and oil is flowing.

The M40D is the same engine as the M50DE, minus some carb settings of course to make up the 10 extra hp.
-John
