Hey Folks,

Need to tap the collective knowledge!

I have a 1993 Volvo 501B V8 5L that overheated last summer when the water intake hose broke at the elbow on the outdrive.

I compression tested it (it came up witin spec), and replaced the rubber bits that were damaged, and it appeared to run fine.
This summer, the motor began to run rough and then stopped. I checked the oil and it is milky and very runny.

The shop pulled the motor for me, and they report that the head gasket is split, and that the water appears to have been in the engine oil for some time due to the volume of it.
They also suspect a crank rod is bent.

Here's where I sit. They've spent 10 hours @ $65 removing the motor and coming to that diagnosis. They suggest that we should send the engine to a machine shop to evaluate the crank and to check the head for warping. That could run another $500 of diagnositic effort.

Or I could scrap the block and locate a remanufactured one.

My questions:
1. What should I expect to pay for a reman 5L motor?
2. Any engine builders you guys recomend?
3. Should I have the engine evaluated by the machine shop, or go with a reman block?
4. What's a reasonable price to pay to re-install a block?

Thanks for any advice you care to share!
Jim
