i have 1968 120hp, 153cid, 2.5L Mercruiser and went i check the oil was ok then i take to the bay above 35 min. off shore then the lifters start sounding little bit and in the way back 35 min. more run fine but at the dock i notice the lifter sounding again i get the boat out and go home for the day but went i was washing the boat i check the oil and needs above 3 qts i using what mercruiser recommend 25/40 oil.
no smoke and the bilge is clean and dry unless the eng. was not completed level went i do the ck the oil first time; i going fishing to the same place on Saturday i going to be shure that the boat is level and the oil is at the line.

i forget to mention that went the lifter start sounding the pressure lower from 40 to 20.

I do a second test. I drive 12 miles at 3500 rpm speed (20 mph GPS) then i stop the engine because lifter start sounding and when i check the oil was 1/4 and 1/2 low put some oil on and drive back 12 miles to the shore at 3500 rpm (20 mph GPS) when i get to shore take the boat out check the oil and was 1/4 and 1/2 low.

the oil pressure go down and the lifter sound when the oil level drop one qt and i think has to be some sign of oil thru the exaust if the eng. burn oil.?

i check the plugs, boot, pvc and they are fine what i find was some oil on the water hoses and in the valve cover filler cap was muggy i was thinking above small crack in a cilinder block (no water in the oil pan) i don't have oil cooler sys, new head gasket and head resurface and (check for crack)that what the machine shop said he do.. what do you think.?

i also check with the match to light the oil stick and was neg.

I'm not an I/O guy but will offer my thoughts. You have put 4 qts of oil in that thing in an hour of running. If the rings are shot I would think you would see lots of blue oil smoke comming out the exhaust. I don't know where the oil would go if it is being blown out of the rear main seal and not going through the combustion chamber. Hope someone else chimes in on that.

Has the motor ever been rebuilt & if so how long ago or how many hours ago? How long have you had it & what do you know of its history? Did this just start? The motor is 35 years old - not that that is a bad thing.

I would do a compression check & post the results here. I would also not spend a bunch of money doing this or that until you know what is happening.

compression test 80 psi on all 4 cilinders

and today i took the termostat and run the engine for 2 or 3 minutes and went i ck the oil i find some water inside the crankcase and little water in #4 cilinder....

start doing that after i took the termostat i put the termostat and still mix water in the oil.

Is this a raw water cooled engine? Does it use sea water for cooling? The oil has to be going somewhere. If it's not leaking into the bilge or being burned maybe it's leaking into the cooling passages and being pumped through the exhaust. Maybe a blown head gasket?

I sure hope your block is not cracked...

I'd call the machine shop and tell them you are getting water in your cylinder after THEY pressure tested and shaved your head.

Did you torque the head down to specs?

Makes no sense to have a perfect head, new gasket, fully torqued and get water in a cylinder?

Nahh.. sounds like the machine shop made a boo boo.

Time to pressure check the manifold and riser. These are the main two things that cause water in the cylinders. Also your compression is low. Re-check doing a wet compression test.

I took out the manifold and riser and and i find exhaust or intake valve in piston # 2 full of oil look like no oil seal are there my use a O ring not a hat type like others, maybe that why i use to much oil and i see some oil in the water that comes out of the exhaust
