Oil in Input Bellow

2 or 3 weeks ago I changed the oil in the outdrive. Well the manual said it would take 2.5 quarts and I thought to myself that this sounded like way to much, but didnt think anything of it at the time. Well while I was adding oil, I was just pumping away while watching the oil go down in the bottle, to suddenly look up and see oil all just pouring all over the place as I had overfilled it. Does anyone ever get the design capacity of nearly 2.5 qrts in their outdrive?

I am currently rebuilding the transom and noticed gear oil in my bellow and I'm assuming that I have a bad input shaft seal which allowed the oil to enter the bellow.

I'm assuming I need to replace seal no. 82, along with any other seals required from tear down. However, to do it appears that I just need to remove the 4 bolts on the cover place and the shaft will release from the outdrive. Can someone confirm. Additionally, will I mess up any mesh or is there any pre-load that will compromised?

Thanks!

2.5 to 3 quarts is what they take, where were you pumping the oil in at, and where did the oil come out at.

Your bellows needs replaced, there is water in that mess too. You also need a new gimbal bearing, ujoints, and probably the yoke and input shaft seal in the drive. The seal is #82 and the yoke is #16 if the seal surface is bad.

Re: Oil in Input Bellow

Don, I was pumping oil in from the behind the props and it came out of the dip stick hole at the top. I attempted to get the intermediate screw out, but she was in really good. I let the outdrive drain for nearly an hour (with the dip stick removed) before putting any new oil in and the oil had pretty much stop draining, but I was 1.5 qts in when she over flowed. The u-joints appear brand new with no rust and fresh grease. I didn't find any water in bellow, but a lot of old grease from the gimbal and new gear oil.

I certainly want to be proactive since I have everything apart now. So I will re-inspect everything. Thank you for your response.

yeah don't fill it until it comes out of the dipstick, that will way overfill it! if the screws are suck try using a impact screwdriver that will get em out without stripping them. if you still cannot get it out just fill slow and keep checking the level on the dipstick until its in the range. 1.5 qts seems low must not of got it all out or your pumping to fast and trapping air, mine takes about 3 qts!

make sure to check your gimble bearing as don said, and check your bellows or replace them if its been a while and replace that seal! oh and it wouldn't hurt to check engine alignment while you got the drive off!
