Oil in exhaust

The last two times my son has run our 1994 50 hp Evinrude, a residue has appeared under the skeg and appears to be coming from the hub exhaust. It is a black oil residue. On his last trip he says that he was unable to stay at full power until he had his buddy squeeze the priming bulb while powering up. Are these two problems related? I think that I will replace the bulb but any insight on the oil in the exhaust? Thanks in advance.
Granpa

Re: Oil in exhaust

Oil coming out the exhaust is natural for a 2 stroke. They are relatively inefficient burners of the gas/oil mix and a lot goes out the exhaust ports. Seperates when it hits the water in the housing. Thus black oil sludge seeps from openings.

The primer bulb is another issue solved by buying a new one.

Arlan

May be primer bulb and then again it may not be. Could be fuel pump diaphram. I would suggest replacing the whole fuel line, bulb and all with it being as old as it is. You get new tank and engine fittings with fresh o-rings where it could be sucking air.

I notice a lot more of this sludge mess when I'm running with muffs, than I do when I run in a barrel. I guess this is normal also? I didn't realize that 2 strokes let so much unburned fuel go by.
