Was fishing this past weekendthe tube leading from the oil resoivoir to the intake nipple broke, i.e. no oil was mixed with the fuel.

I was running at +/- 4,500 RPM and the motor bogged down and shut off. I did not restart the motor but it will turn over (if I bump the ignition) and it will turn by hand through the flywheel.

Is there any chance that this Mercury has a safety shutoff for overheating/lack of oil as my problem caused?

Also can anyone tell me at what compression the cylinders should be on the motor

No there is no shut down safty, start by removint the plugs and spraying oil in the cyls. then drain the carbs and fuel system, pre mix some fuel at 24 to 1 reprime the system and see if it will start, to test compression on a engine run dry of oil it will always be low till it has been well oiled, hopefully it will start and be fine, if it knocks don't run it long if it seems alright run it a few minites and test compression

I just replaced my hoses for that very reason. The replacement are at least twice the length you need, kind of a one size fits all and about 20 bucks. Sure hope it didn't mess up your engine.
The bogging down was probably seizing from lack of oil.
