Mercruiser 260 V8 GMC. on my last post I had several useful suggestions: blown piston rings , defective valves , gasket wrong way round etc.

Well it turned out that Ihad ded to use a synthetic 0W-50W oil. bad choice..

Oil turned out to be too thin not only did it spurt oil from dip-stick but ceated a lot of smoke from breather. Changed oil to 20W-50W problem solved no oil gushing form dip-stick , smoking dissappeared.

Mario...

Maybe Trent or Fone_Man can explain the "whys"...but I believe Merc recommends using only single grade oil in most their I/O units. Use whatever your service manual calls for.

Walt

30 weight unless your running a ice breaker. Does not break down near as fast as a multi. Every manufactor I check recommends stright weight oil.
