Oil gauge ,incorrect reading

I recently purchased a 2003 with a 250 HPDI engine, the previous owner told me the oil tank was full, so I didn't think about the gauge reading full, however after several trips, I noticed the gauge had not moved.

Being a little cautious, I looked at tank. It was too dark and dirty to tell the level.
I decided to add some oil, figuring the worse that could happen was overflow at fill.

After pouring almost a gallon into the tank, I stopped and checked the bilge for oil. (nothing).

If the gauge is not working ,how do I trouble shoot and manually check tank level.

Re: Oil gauge ,incorrect reading

its not a level guage like a fuel guage.
it only shows if enough oil is remaining in the remote tank for automatic transfer.
when there is not the far right bar will go out and the center bar illumintes or flashes.
20 min or so after that and the far left bar, audible alarm and RPM reduction is going to occur.
2 tanks for the remote, a 2.9 gallon and a 5 gallon.
which do you have?

no reading.
the far right bar stays on until the remote tank doesnt have enough for automatic transfer.
then the center bar lights up or flashes.
from there you can manually refill the engine tank about twice before your simply out of oil.
that or refill the remote tank.
really need the 5 gallon tank with a Z250.
they kinda hog oil at about 32/1.
