24:1 means 1/4 of a quart for 6 gallons? I also have a 1982 15, and that takes 50:1, so the 1961 engine takes less oil?

No, it takes twice as much as your 50:1 outboard. About 1 litre (I think that's roughly a quart) to a 6 gallon tank.

Most bottles of oil have a conversion chart on them but just in case I copied this from penzoil's bottle for 24:1
Fuel 1 Gallon 5 Gallon 10 Gallon
Oil 5.5oz 26.5oz 53oz

Easy, It's a quart to 6 gallons. A pint to 3. Most of the smaller bottles nowadays comes in pint bottles for 6 gallons @ 50:1. You just use twice as many of them.

If your ever in doubt here is a site I find very useful for all my 2 cycle mixes. I have 50:1, 32:1 and 40:1 gas motors so I do get confused from time to time. I write the mix on the can and the motor so I don't use the wrong fuel in the wrong motor. Rick.

You have to remember that 50:1 is a ratio, not a percentage (as in 50 parts of gas for every 1 part of oil). As a percentage it's 2% oil in the gas. 24:1 is about 4% oil in the gas.

A liter is only slightly more than 2 cups (1/2 quart), not nearly a quart.

No that's not right, JB. Our litre is about equilavent to a quart.

I just looked it up...

1 Litre = 1.06 US quarts

Yep, Wayne is right, there's 4.14 litres in a US gallon (128oz) and 4.54 litres in a Canadian gallon (160oz).

Oooops! My bad. I just looked at my measuring cup. What I thought was a litre is actually 1/2 litre.

I bought one of those semi-clear measuring bottles from a local marine shop for about $2. It comes with a lid and makes measuring oil real easy when you buy the cheaper 1 gallon oil containers. I keep it in the dry storage bin of my boat. All this figuring makes my head hurt. :)

It happens, JB.

I actually mix my gas in a 5 gallon can (20 litres at a time) and add it to my 3 gal tank as needed. That way the mix is always right - no guessing.

Wayne, the problem with pre mixing it is that I need the 2 ratios. Hmmm, maybe that means I need a 2nd container!
