if the engine is stock then it doesn't matter whether you run 89 or 93 octane. Save your money and run 89.

To change from a 40:1 to 50:1 mix you just need to add 1.25 gallons of gas to the 5 gallon tank. Personally, the difference is so small I wouldn't worry about it. A little more oil will not kill a stock engine.

Now if the engine has a high compression head on it you may need to run a higher octane gas. If someone that knew it had a high compression head on it, and knew the compression then they may be right and you need to run 93. Or they could just think the a higher octane is always better. I start by checking the compression. If it's around 150 regular gas is fine. If it's much high like 170+ you'll need more octane.

you aren't harming anything by running 40:1, just a bit of extra lubrication.

the only side effect you may experience is that your plugs foul more often - but that really depends on how much low speed vs. high speed running you do on the motor.

if it's in a sit-down - they tend to run longer at higher speeds, so plug fouling will probably not be an issue.

ditto on the 93 octane - only necessary if you have increased compression.
