Oil for my new 4 stroke tohatsu 9.8

I just bought a 2004 tohatsu 9.8 4 stroke they recommend tohatsu 4 stroke oil API sg,sh,sj. In a 4 stroke outboard do you need to run marine 4 stroke oil and can you run a good oil off the shelf, car type oil which is API sl. The sl type grade is a higher grade oil from what I have been told. Thanks for your help.

You can run a good off the shelf oil. Just make sure you follow the oil viscosity recommendations.

As DJ says. I use 10-40 Chevron Supreme API SL<br />in my outboard and some other things. Works fine.
