Re: Oil filter

Sure..the engine doesn't know the difference. Inexpensive automotive filters have a thin cannister that can rust through.

I disagree. The filters are just rebranded. When I did my first oil change on my then new boat, the Mercruiser markings and black paint ( if you can call it that) scraped off from the original factory filter from using a filter wrench. Once I got it off and scraping some more of the original paint/markings off off I found that the filter was actually a blue AC Delco, PF-47 model. That was on a Mercruiser 2009 4.3L V-6.

Re: Oil filter

I'm saying that using an inexpensive automotive filter can result in rust through. Most marine filters are well painted and have decent shells to prevent this.

I think you'd have to leave a filter on for a long, long time before it rusts through if it ever did.

Try less than a year for failure. "course us salt water guys have a different environment, but ALL marine stuff rusts.

Re: Oil filter

SOME people only change their oil every few years.
They say I only use it a few times and it ain't dirty. Then the guy who changes it struggles.

I worked on a Wellcraft(with innner and outer hull) that I had to lift the motor to get the filter off.(Same with the starter on the other motor.)
It had been on there for 6 years and finnaly rusted through.
I made a lot of $$$ on that job.J

Re: Oil filter

Wether or not a filter has an anti-drainback feature depends on the engine it was originally designed for, NOT marine vs. automotive. And avoid Fram filters. Why? Ask our filter crusher, there is nothing to them, the machine doesn't even feel 'em. Tin foil makes a stronger shell....and don't even get me started about the cardboard...
