That time of year again. My 5.0MPI takes 35-866340 oil filter. Last year I bought QuickSilver on Amazon for $10. This year it’s $20. And a lot of online sellers ((West Marine, Walmart, some Marine parts houses) are completely out of stock.

Any reason I can’t use a decent filter from this list : X-ref ?

I heard marine filters have more rust resistant cans but this will be changed next year. I also know the quality of the anti drainback valve is more important in an inverted mounting position.

That being said any reason I shouldn’t use something like an ACDelco for 1/3 the price?

I've used Sierra marine filters which are always available at West Marine and other sellers but I think you can use a good automotive filter as well. Even in my salt water environment I haven't had problems with oil or fuel filters getting rusted; they get changed yearly.

I just use a high quality filter (e.g., Wix, Mobil 1), whatever is readily available.

You could certainly use another brand, but if you shop around you should find the Merc/Quicksilver oil filter for less than $20.

Your choice.

I like Napa cause they are the last man standing for local shops with any knowledge at all in my area. They get my business every time I can.

Thanks. WIX always had a great rep in the auto world so I went with the 57099XP (their premium version). Went to order on Amazon for $10 when I noticed they had an open box return for $2. Grabbed it.

Literally, including shipping, $15 was the cheapest I could find a Quick Silver filter for and that was a private seller on eBay that had 1 available in a beat up box. Must be supply chain issues for West Marine to even have it unavailable online.

👍🏻

Any brand auto filters will work, If your really worried watch the Youtube videos when they cut them open and compare. For the amount of running time a year most boats get it's most definitely a mute point either way. Ranks up there with what's your favorite oil brand

That’s what I figured but wanted to confirm with those more knowledgeable. Thanks

I use the same Mobil 1 filter on my tow truck and my boat.
When I can't find a Mobil 1 I have used Wix.

I’ve read plenty of BITOG. My take is that regular Fram was junk but that the premium Frams were okay. I used Fram Racing Filters on my race car with no issues.
