Not a stupid question, and yes you can. If you follow the tube, you will see it goes to the bottom of the oil pan. You do not have to put a seperate tube down the dipstick tube either, just hook a hose on the end and hook it to your pump.

It's connected to the bottom of the pan.

Yes it does a pretty good job of getting out the oil. If you want to see how much is left pull the drain plug afterwards. I tried it and did not get much oil coming out of my drain pan.

Re: oil change

Thanks to all, that saves me trying to look for a tube small enough to hook on my vacume tank.

That will require a better pump though, won't it? I tried to do this with a little drill pump a couple of years ago & couldn't generate the lift to get the oil started. Wonder if a tube down the dipstick tube would have worked with the drill pump.<br /><br />I borrowed a good manual oil pump from a friend & ran the small tube down the dipstick tube, worked great. <br /><br />Just for the heck of it, next oil change I'm gonne try the drill pump with a small tube down the dipstick tube and also the good manual pump with a larger tube hooked to the top of the dipstick tube.

Prime the pump with a little oil first and see if that helps.

Re: oil change

For those of you who can actually reach your drain plugs without too much difficulty, and do most maintenance at home on a trailer, and do not want to invest in a pump, I found the following alternative to work very well:<br /><br />Replace your oil drain plug with one of the FRAM SureDRAIN for about $13. It comes with a short hose that won't work for a boat...replace or extend the short orange hose it comes with so it's long enough to stick out of your drain plug.<br /><br />Now whenever you need to change your oil, you just remove the cap, fish the oil drain hose through the plug in the boat and into your drain pan, and now screw the hose onto the plug and it'll start to flow. No mess, no pumps needed, cheap and easy. I have them on all my cars, too.<br /><br />Here's propaganda from Fram's website:<br /><br />"FRAM® SureDRAIN™ Fast Access Oil Change System <br />The easier way to change your oil. Now you can drain your oil with no tools, no mess and no hot oil on your hands with the revolutionary new SureDRAIN Fast Access Oil Change System brought to you by the trusted name in filters….FRAM. <br /><br />Now you can have instant access to your oil with just a turn of the wrist!<br /><br /> Proprietary SureDRAIN Valve - this unique, heavy duty Actuator Valve is precision engineered to permanently replace your existing oil drain plug and allow instant oil access and draining.<br /><br />Twist on Drain Hose - Designed for fast, easy, twist on operation, the heavy duty FRAM drain hose starts the flow of oil directly into your receptacle with the turn of your wrist.<br /> <br /> Added Protection Dust Cover - To keep the SureDRAIN valve free from road dirt and safe from undercarriage debris, the ultra-rugged SureDRAIN dust cover locks firmly into place until the next oil change. Like all SureDRAIN parts, this dust cover has been tested against leaks, corrosion, vibration and road damage."

Re: oil change

A few years ago I bought a portable oil change pump from Bass proshops, you know the cheap $20 electric pump that comes with the stupid little hose that fits inside of your dipstick........that unit got thrown across the garage at a great rate of speed, was swept up and placed where it belongs...in the trash can. while $80 was a bit more than the $20 unit, my Jabsco oil changer will "suck a bowling ball through a garden hose" and it screws right on to the dipstick. I have used it many times, works great, no mess and can be done while the boat is in the water and can drain 6 quarts in under two minutes. As an added bonus, it works on any boat I work on.

Another vote for the Jabsco - I use it for the boat, my vehicles, small engines, etc. Works great! Worth every cent!
