I know that this may seem like a stupid question to some of you guys out there, but I was wondering how to change the oil on my outboard... it's a Mercury Blueband 70hp. There is a screw just above the water intake where I place the "earmuffs" when running the engine out of the water. I think this has something to do with it...but I'm not sure... is this to drain the oil or to top the oil up ?

Also...what type of oil would you recommend.

Thank you... as you can tell, I'm new to the boating world and I appreciate any advice from the experts!

Re: Oil Change

the top screw is the oil level plug and thers one at the very bottom which is the drain, the gearbox is filled from the bottom to the top so eliminating air pockets when it flows out from the top hole you know its full.
they use a pressure pump to fill them usually but you can buy squeeze tubes of gearcase lube that will do the job.
when you drain your oil make sure its not milky this would indicate water in the gearcase which is not good.
good luck!.

Re: Oil Change

That's a good link schematic, thank you. I have a 1994 Mercruiser Alpha 1 that I need to check the gear lube level. I had the gear lube changed in the fall by the dealer but they forgot to add to the reservoir and I want to make sure they actually replaced it. The Nissan link says to remove the top plug and use a piece of wire to check the level. I'm assuming this applies to a Mercruiser also? I don't want to introduce any air pockets or anything. Thanks...

Re: Oil Change

For a conventional O/B, I use an oil can filled with gear lube to do the final top up through the vent hole. Keep filling until the lube comes out. let it find its own level, then install plug.....
