I'm going to change the oil in my 351w (inboard). There seems to be a lot of schools of thought on this and I can't seem to get a straight answer. What do you recommend for engine oil - 10w-30??? Can I get the oil and filter at an autozone or alike?

Thanks

depends whether or not you have an engine oil cooler.

If you do, 10W30

If not, go heavier, e.g. 20W50, 25W40 or straight 30

The API (American Petroleum Institute) recommends a 5-20 oil in all engines but diesel. Google API and you'll see for your self.

Yes, 10 - 30 or 10-40 will do as well as any oil. Consider the reason why API suggests you use 5-20 oil; The greatest amount of engine wear comes at start up. Therefore the lighter the weight of oil to get pumped around when first started the better it is for the engine. :)

The great oil debate. It's all marketing. Don't fall for it.

wow, they sure don't
that's some seriously bad advice that I hope no one takes

obviously, API recommends you follow your vehicles owner's manual

and 5W-20 would be a good way to wreck a boat engine unless it has an oil cooler or is being used in northern climates in the winter
