Does anyone know what part number I need for my Merc to add the oil change drain hose? I have spent about $200 on various dipstick pumps and they never work. Any down side to using one of these drain plug hose things?

Do you warm the engine (and the oil) up before trying to get it out of the engine? I thought those engines came with that hose already installed, have you checked?

Should be a hose right in the bottom of the pan. They may have missed hooking it to the drain plug, but I would bet the hose is there.
Item 22. Reach under there and feel for it.

Re: Oil change drain hose

I installed one of these (1/2 inch-20):

It was a PITA to install with the engine in the boat, and I am a fairly large guy, which didnt make it any easier, but by golly, I got 'er in! I was looking for one that attached to the transom plug via a cable. If you get one like that, you pull the transom plug, pull on the attached cable, and viola, the hose comes out your transom drain hole. Alas, my hose fitting is a fraction of an inch too big, so I am relegated to hooking it up to a pump to pump it out after I warm up the oil. Works like a charm.

My 5.7 has a dipstick tube that goes right down to where the oil drain plug would be. On the upper end of the dipstick tube, it has a standard garden hose size male threaded end. I tried a hand pump, took forever. Went to Ace Hardware, and they have a pump that attaches to your electric drill for $7.99. I used it the first time last week, and it emptied the crankcase in about 90 seconds! (Hooked up to my Milwaukee 1/3 hp electric drill.)

If you have a standard oil drain plug in the pan, you could install a Fumoto valve. Just get one with the nipple option, so you can attach a hose. When you want to drain, run the hose out the bilge drain and flip the switch on the valve. FUMOTO ENGINEERING If it's a 5.0 you have, just get one for a small block Chevy engine.

Thanks guys. I will double check the next time I am down there. I am a big guy (6'4" 250lbs) so its a bit difficult to get under the motor for me.

I'm right there with you! and I was able to do it (got into positions I never thought I would get out of. Glad the Admiral didn't have the camera handy!)

Gonna sound goofy but see if you can enlist a neighbor kid to get in there and reach around to feel for the hose. Its not rocket science any kid would do it for a few $ could end up saving you a bunch in the long run. Mirrors and flash lights are your friend make use of them too if possible. good luck it should be there if its that new of a boat.

So is a small digital camera.

Just curious, if you can't get to it to even check to see if one is there, how do you plan on installing one

One step at a time don :)

I feel your pain...:blue: I too am a bit large for that, at 6' 5" and just over 200. Was a bear to get under the 454 to install the hose, (almost needed a "back cracker" after that one) but I got it done. Sooooooooooo much easier to pump out the oil (don't fancy the out the plug idea). Works real nice when boat is at dockside. Plus it pulls ALL the oil out, including the stuff on bottom of pan that has the bad gunk in it. I tend to believe the dipstick method doesn't get all the bottom stuff out.

And let those kids clean your bilge too ;)

Re: Oil change drain hose

Hey guys. I just wanted to follow up. I was able to get a good look under the motor. No drain hose. Don't know what the deal is with that. If its something the factory or dealer forgot to put on. The owners manual says that it should be there but its not. On the bright side there is a drain plug right on the bottom of the pan that I can get to. I was supprised when I found it seeing as every oil pan I have used has the plug on the side of the pan. I will order the hose and make a mess out of the bilge but after installing the hose it should be a one time only thing. Thanks for the help.

Re: Oil change drain hose

Just wondering if anyone knows what size hose I should order? I see there is a .5 and a .375. Does anyone know what size my boat takes?

I got one from Harbor Freight and it worked like a charm $5. Warm it up first, the drain line on my boat takes forever, pump 3 min.

1st, you need to get the one with the fitting that fits the drain plug fitting thread size and then a hose to fit into that fitting, what ever thread size that is. Generally, the bigger the hose, the more oil it'll flow at a given temp, but the hole in the fitting in the pan that feeds the hose is usally pretty small.

Just consider that if you are going to run it out the transome drain plug hole to drain into a bucket, the bigger hose may not fit through the hole. I attach a pump to the hose inside the engine compartment and pump from there, so the bigger hose seemed my logical choice. Silly me, I could put a 2" hose on there, but if the oil pan fitting hole is only 1/4" then what's the point?

You selection may vary, depending on what you want to do to get the oil out once the hose is installed..

Just a suggestion....

Since its at the dealer having the drive replaced, maybe you can "leverage" that problem into having the hose installed for a reasonable price. My take is it should have come with it from the factory; standard part on new Mercruiser V-8's.
