Hello all,

I have a Penta 8.1 GI-H 375hp engine in my Azure boat. I believe the engine is 2007 It is their RED engine series.

Yesterday I changed the oil for the first time since ive owned it. I ran the engine for 20 minutes to warm the oil, then using a suction pump I removed the oil from the dip stick tube. The odd thing is that I only removed 6 quarts.
When I refilled the engine it took 6.5 quarts (including the oil I primed in the filter).

My manual advises that my engine should take 9 quarts with filter but when i check my dipstick I am right at the top of "safe" which of course indicated I am full.

I ran the engine for about 10 minutes ot cycle the oil. I had good oil pressure and the engine sounded and ran fine. I waited for 5 minutes and checked the oil again and it is exactly in the same spot.

Does anyone else have an 8.1 GI-H with this issue? I am nervous about running the oil 2.5 quarts low, or 2.5 quarts over capacity if I add more.

Thank you in advance,
Jer

So you pumped 6 and probably removed another .5 in the old filter. That puts you 2.5 quarts shy of capacity. Depending on how long she cooled off, some of the oil was still in the passages. If you have an oil cooler that may be holding some oil as well. I also have heard that suction pumps can't get all of the oil out to begin with. Sorry I can't give you a difinitive answer but I'm sure someone will follow up with one.

Yes pumped 6, and the other .5 was in the old filter.

I verified it was empty with the dip stick.

I also verified that my suction tube went in to the dip stick hole as deep as the actually dip stick. So I sucked everything out that would have been read by the dip stick.

The service manual shows 6 without filter. Just a typo in the owners manual. That same 6 vs 9 problem has been going on in the service manuals for years, but they get changed with service bulletins. Owners manuals do not get fixed.

Yes I think that is plausable. What I think is odd though is that if you go to Volvo's site now it advises 9 quarts as well.

Where did you read that it takes 6 quarts? I trust your answer since it corresponds with my dip stick but I would just like to know. Im an anxious freak!

Thank you for the speedy response!

I got the info from the OEM service manual.

Once Volvo makes a typo, it lasts forever. They had a problem back in 94 & 95 with the wrong way of setting timing for the EST distributors. Sent out a service bulletin about it. Then in every manual since they have made the same mistake. I guess they don't have a clue on how to fix documents.
