Mom and I will be barging down the Ohio River in 6 weeks and I understand our stops depend on how high or low the river is. Can anyone tell me the condition of the river and if Katrina caused any kind of flooding or anything I need to be aware of? Our trip takes off in Cincinnati and goes along through Kentucky.
Thanks.
Bassy

Katrina had little effect on the River Bassy. Any-who....with six weeks before you go boatin', any effects down river should be pretty well gone by then. I live further up the river near Wheeling, WVa. Was out last night on the toon....pretty nice. Water temp about 80*.

Re: Ohio River

Bassy, Here in Cincinnati, the river is perfect. Today is the most popular day on the river as we have RIVERFEST, a large outdoor fireworks display. There will be several thousand boats on the river and all three shorelines (OH, KY, IN) will be lined with people.
Since your trip is a few weeks off I should mention that after the first week in Sept. The summer season is "over" and the marinas do not have fuel docks open all week, as they do durring summer season. As for the river level, there should be no problems untill Winter and early Spring, when the river rises. Most of us are still boating in this area through Oct and even early Nov, just make sure you have a jacket and long pants at night.
Enjoy your trip....it will be beautiful.

So, would you say the river is normal, high or low?

http://ahps.erh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ahps.cgi?iln&ccno1
Here is the link to the current status.
Waterone is right. I'm in Cincy too and I can see the river from where i sit and it is sweet. Though I must say the traffic after the fireworks is amazing - it streams past for seemingly hours.
Good luck on your trip. I hope you keep folks posted. I love to read about folks living and cruising on their boats. Are you going to have a computer on board?

Hey Bassy, I'm just west of Evansville In. On the river every chance I get. If you will let me know when you are barging by in your bikini I will be happy to provide escort to keep the throngs away. There are plenty of links that will give you the three day river level forecasts but it's hard to predict six weeks ahead.
