Cheer me up guys and girls. I just started my Mercury 50hp 2 stroke on land. Got it going nicely, but the muffs weren't really tight against the motor (first time for me), so a lot of water leaked out the side. anyway, I didn't get any thing from the pee hole. I stupidly didnt push the muffs flushed, instead started again for a few seconds, and I felt a lot of air gushing from the hole, but alas no water. It goes in the water tomorrow, i am dead worried as to weather i should delay launching, or instead test it in its natural environment. Have worked on this lovely boat for 7 long months during a harsh Swedish winter, no i wanna cry... :(

I will now read FAQs, but any feed back would be great

With regard to running the engine, how long is too long when trying to test it in the water?

Atfter trawling the forum, it would appear that there can be a delay in the pump kicking out a stream. SO the big question is, should i drop it in the water tomorrow and test it there?

Yes, you can leave it on the trailer and do your test run of the motor. If all goes well launch 'er.

P.S
Don't forget the plug!! :D

I must have run the engine for all of 50 seconds, can there be a delay before the water pumps out? the engine wasn't so warm. Against probably every one else's better judgment i am gonna lunch. Its different her in sweden, a communal boat yard, i don't really have many other opportunities. If its fully submerged, maybe it will work. perhaps i am jumping to conclusions cause of my beginners nerves.

Plenty of air was pumping out from the hole, is this a good sign?

Give a few mins to warm up. If it has a thermostat  that will have to get warm enough to allow the water to flow from the pee hole. My 150 is that way. It takes a min or two for it to pee. Don't rev, just idle for a few mins.

I hope its that. Like i say, I had a really ****ty connection with the muffs, water was leaking out all over the place. SO I could have judged to quickly. Plus I ran it for all of a minute (out of fear)

You can always consider dropping the lower unit and taking a look at the water pump impeller. This might save you an unnecessary trip to the dock if you already can see that the impeller blades were visibly damaged from running dry.
