official introduction: my new boat

My wife and I had decided to buy a boat sometime last year. We rented this really nice 26' hurricane and fell in love with it. Since we currently live on the gulf, why not take advantage of it.

After talking with friends, posting here and talking with a dealer, I stumbled on this 2004 bayliner 160br with a 90hp merc outboard on ebay. It was only about an hour drive for us, so we shot up there, liked what we saw and pulled the trigger :).

All and all I feel that I got a really good deal. We were planning on paying 10k+ for our boat and trailer, but found this one for well below that.

I am brand spanking new to boating, but have a lot of wrench time on cars. I am hoping to do most of the small things myself. Having said that I am by no means a mechanic. I am a weekend warrior... I have no problem swallowing my pride and taking it to a dealer (my last thread about trying to get the glass in proves that, which I still havn't done).

So, I had it out of the garage today cleaning it and hooked up the "earmuffs" and started her up. Just a couple questions.

I noticed a bit of oil/fuel leaking into the transom. I checked around and put some new zip ties on the lines I could see leaking, but am not sure if this is normal.

I also noticed where it looks like the hull has been repaired. Should I be concerned?

Cleaning the boat, I just took a hose and some car soap and started spraying away. The boat does have carpet throughout except for the bow. Hosing this carpet ok to do as long as I air dry it?

Any tips or pointers also are greatly appreciated :). I bought a book, well more of a textbook about boating skills and seamanship and am looking to take a class.

Here are a couple more pics I took with my cell phone to show the concerns.

Thanks everyone!

Hose clamps instead of zip ties for fuel lines. Gelcoat is a water barrier, but where chipped away, water intrusion may occur into the hull laminate. Repair with gelcoat. Pictures show a nice clean rig. Congratulations.

My older carbed two strokes will drip mixed gas outta the carbs and into the splashwell like that when tilted up. Not much you can do about it methinks.

Thanks! Should I buy some gel coat touch up paint and go over those spots in the pictures?

Also, are the ear muffs the best thing to use in order to flush the saltwater out of the motor? I wasn't 100% sure they were on right since there was water seeping out of them.

Muffs are fine for flushing. They don't make a watertight seal against the intakes on the lower unit, so they'll always leak. Flush at idle speed only. No revving.

Congrats on the new boat!

ok good. I was worried I would burn it up or something, so I only ran it for a minute or so.

I have a couple more pics here.

Any luck installing/finding anyone to install the windshield?

I called "Boaters Landing" here locally and they said they would do it for me. I just need to find the time to take it over there. Not sure how much they will charge though. I currently have the windshield sitting in my office on the carpet far away from danger.

I hear you man, I have an older Bayliner which I needed to get the starboard glass for, i made sure it was safer than a kid strapped in a child seat wrapped also with bubble wrap. Installing it was a little nerve wrecking, but got it done.

Have you taken her out yet?

haha, so you did it yourself? Man... I have respect for you.

Not yet. Hoping to on sunday. I have been cleaning it up and getting it ready. My buddy told me this will be the only time I will clean it so much. I believe him too...

Keep an eye on that rust spot on the trailer. I bet if you look at the underside you may see rust through.

Will do. The lights aren't working either. The PO has this light bar installed on it... I am going to look into fixing that. Should I spray some inhibitor on it?

I also need two brackets for the rear seat bar support. they literally dissolved away. I removed the 4 screws and pulled what was left of them up, but I cannot get the brackets off the bar. Maybe just order the bar and brackets?
